PBIS: Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports

Federalsburg Elementary School SOAR

Stay Safe & Ready

Own Our Responsibilities

Achieve Our Goals

Respect Self & Others

PBIS is a system that the staff use to positively guide students’ actions. As students show good behavior, they will be able to earn positive rewards throughout the school year. This system is intended to encourage positive decision-making by the students.

As the students show good behavior, they will be able to earn positive rewards throughout the school year. This system is intended to encourage positive decision-making by the students. By following the SOAR expectations of being “Safe & Ready, Own their responsibilities, Achieve their goals, and Respect self & others,” students will be able to earn positive rewards such as “Falcon Feathers,” stickers to put on their Falcon Grids, Fantastic Falcon award, etc. They will be able to spend the Falcon Feathers once a month at the PBIS store. When students fill up their Falcon grid with their stickers they get a Positive Referral and a chance to spin the prize wheel.
All students were involved in a Passport activity the first week of school that took them through all areas of the building and the SOAR expectations that we have at each area. Therefore, all students know what behavior is expected of them as they move throughout the building. As students exhibit the expected behaviors within our building, they will receive the aforementioned rewards.

If students choose not to follow our SOAR expectations, they will receive a Minor Incident Report, which will be used to determine their individual consequences.
Federalsburg is very excited to have earned a Gold status recognition through the State for the past few years, and we look forward to working with you to make it your child’s best year yet!

FES Parent Guide to PBIS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. PBIS creates schools where all students succeed. (pbis.org)

Tier 1 practices and systems establish a foundation of regular, proactive support while preventing unwanted behaviors. Schools provide these universal supports to all students, school-wide.

Tier 2 practices and systems support students who are at risk for developing more serious problem behaviors before those behaviors start. These supports help students develop the skills they need to benefit from core programs at the school.

At Tier 3, students receive more intensive, individualized support to improve their behavioral and academic outcomes. At this level, schools rely on formal assessments to determine a student’s need.

FES has supports in place to promote and reward positive student behaviors.

The following are relevant to classroom teachers.

Morning Shout Outs

This weekly support recognizes students for daily positive behaviors, as well as notable improvements either academically or behaviorally.

Teachers add to the “morning shout outs sheet” when they feel a student has earned this.  The goal would be for teachers to add at least two students each week if applicable.  Students are recognized on morning announcements each week.

Falcon Flyer Grid

Also known as sticker charts, these supports are used for recognizing individuals for regular positive behaviors such as being respectful and kind to classmates and staff, excellent participation, ah-ha moments academically, anything that you feel stands out in a moment.

Teachers award stickers to student(s) “in the moment” or as they see fit.  When a student has completely filled a sticker chart, the teacher decides how to reward them.  Ideas for virtual rewards:  lunch with the teacher, 5 extra break minutes, 5 minute show and tell, choose the brain break, etc.

Fantastic Falcon

This monthly support is for those students who SOAR on a regular basis (almost ALL DAY EVERY DAY).

Teachers add their Fantastic Falcon to the “ PBIS Fantastic Falcons 20/21” sheet.  Students will be recognized on morning announcements at the beginning of each month.  A celebration of FF will be held at end of 2nd quarter and 4th quarter.
